The Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope design is usually considered the most versatile of all commercially available telescope designs. In our opinion no other telescope design accepts this many accessories, can be used for quite so many different applications.

Today Celestron's product range not only includes the famed C-8, but also smaller and larger siblings of this telescope from 6" to an incredible 14" aperture.

With the C-6 Celestron has introduced a new aperture for Schmidt-Cassegrain telescopes (SCTs). The C-6 offers more aperture and a plus of 40% in light gathering capacity compared with a 5" telescope, yet has extremely compact dimensions and no false colour, making it superior to typical Fraunhofer refractors of similar aperture on the moon and the planets and at the same time far more portable.
Fields of Use

The Celestron C-6 is one of the most versatile 150mm aperture telescopes that we know. It offers good performance throughout all fields of visual and photographical astronomy. Planets and the moon are depicted with similar contrast as a good Newtonian.

At f/10 the C-6 is still comparatively "fast" as opposed to most Maksutov-Cassegrains. Also field illumination is large enough for 2" accessories. Fields of view up to about 1.5° are possible with the right eyepieces, approximately three times the diameter of the full moon.

With a focal reducer the focal ratio can be pushed to 1:6, resulting in much shorter exposure times.

With its primary mirror focus mechanism many accessories can be used easily that cause troubles on other telescopes, such as binocular viewers, off axis guiders, strong focal reducers, ...

Portability

The C-6 is a supremely portable companion for travelling. It is compact and light, fitting on a compact mount such as the Giro Mini XT (see image above).

Medium-sized mounts like the ADM or CAM carry the C-6 with enough power reserves for serious astro-imaging with heavy accessories like tele-lenses, guide scopes, ...

With its short tube length of only 33 cm the C-6 fits into small bags and can even be taken as carry-on luggage on airplanes.

Schmidt-Cassegrain Collimation

A Schmidt-Cassegrain is collimated on a star using the three secondary mirror collimation screws. Collimation is rarely necessary, and very simple.

Cleaning / Maintenance

Primary and secondary mirror are protected from dirt and dust by the Schmidt correcting lens. The correcting lens has a hard, scratch resistant coating and will therefore not be damaged if cleaned carefully. Cleaning is only required once in a couple of years.

Visual Use

Every amateur will confirm this: With an 8" (203mm) telescope you will cross a boundary beyond which thousands of objects become visible. The optics do not only show countless beautiful details on the moon and the planets - as a smaller achromat of 120mm aperture or a Newtonian of 150mm aperture possibly could show too. Given good "seeing" (a term that describes the negative influence of the Earth's atmosphere on visible detail) the C-8 will show small discs instead of just points of light where the moons of Jupiter are. With the proper filters cloud structures in Venus' atmosphere can be seen!

On top of that the large aperture of the Celestron C-8 captures enough light so that you can see thousands of deep sky objects in detail - galaxies will reveal their spiral structure, planetaries and gas nebulae will show lots of detail and globulars are often dissolved into single stars.

Celestron 9 - Optical Tube with dovetail plate (the plate on the image is the optional Losmandy-format plate)

Celestron C-9 on sturdy equatorial mount Celestron ADM - a powerful and versatile combination.

The C-9.25 is more than just a fill-in between the C-8 and the C-11. It has almost the same tube length as the C-11, but a smaller primary mirror. The C-9.25 intentionally deviates from the classical 2x5 optical layout (i.e. a primary mirror with f/2, and a secondary with 5x magnification). The result is a particularly high contrast image on planets and the moon as well as all other objects. Many observers have chosen the C-9.25 as their favourite among Schmidt-Cassegrains.

Visual Use

Deep Sky objects are an easy prey for the telescope's enormous 9.25" primary mirror and the excellent transmission of this Celestron Schmidt-Cassegrain. Faint nebulae and galaxies will reveal details that are simply invisible in smaller instruments. Extended objects can be seen with this telescope with the optional TS 2" Kit.

Due to its "relaxed" optical layout the image quality on the moon and the planets is particularly good.

The C-9.25 of course shows all objects and details that the C-8 will show, adding a lot more light gathering power and therefore bringing more objects within reach of this telescope. More galaxies will show their spiral structure. Globular clusters will be easily dissolved.

Celestron C-11 Schmidt Cassegrain

Celestron C-11 on CGE .... a top combination for demanding users. This combination can be used both for visual and serious astrophotographical ambitions.

The CGE GoTo mount offers automated object positioning and a large database that will last for a lifetime of astronomical observing or imaging!

Of course the mechanical stability is extremely good - we can recommend this combination even under somewhat windy environments.

The Celestron C-11 is a special recommendation for amateur astronomers looking for a large aperture telescope that is still compact and portable. The C-11 is probably one of the most popular Celestron advanced level telescopes.

Visual Use

Each C-11 has hand-corrected and precisely figured optics. As a result you get a high image definition and contrast, even when observing the planets and the moon. Under normal conditions the resolution is not limited by the telescope, but by the atmosphere (seeing).

At 280mm aperture thousands of galaxies, nebulae and clusters are visible. Some nebulae even begin to show their colourful nature. For deep sky observations we recommend our 2" Kit (see below for details). With that kit you will be able to see larger objects in the field of view of the eyepiece.

Astro-Imaging

One of the strong points of this versatile telescope is its photographical capabilities. With the Alan Gee focal reducer you keep down exposure times and will get impressive images. The C-11 has been used by demanding astro-photographers for decades!

Available Mounts for the C-11

We offer the C-11 as optical tube assembly or on one of three different mounts. Other mounts can be combined with the C-11 as well, such as the Losmandy G-11 or the Gemini 41. Please send your request if you want to get the C-11 on a mount that is not offered below!
