Off Axis Guider

Off-Axis Guiders are an elegant alternative to Guide Scopes for Astro-Imaging. Their main advantage is the much lower weight. Also any tracking errors that might otherwise occur due to mirror shift will be eliminated.

Off Axis Guider for Newtonians and Refractors

Easy Guider for 2" focusers

Easy Guider for 1.25" focusers

This 2" Off Axis Guider is an ideal solution for guiding for long exposure astro imaging. The Off Axis Guider is a lot more compact and much lighter than a conventional guide scope.

This Off Axis Guider requires only about 20mm optical path and is thus one of the shortest Off Axis Guiders available. This makes it possible to use the Guider even in many Newtonian telescopes with their notoriously tight back focus.

The Off Axis Guider has a 2" barrel on the telescope side. The barrel is threaded for use of filters. On the camera side the guider has a T2 (M42x0.75) male thread. You can attach DSLR cameras with a regular T-ring.

A small prism redirects a small portion of the field of view into the eyepiece holder. You can use 1.25" reticle eyepieces or autoguiders.

The guiding turret can be rotated 360° and can be moved a few millimetres in each direction to find and center a guide star.

The Lumicon Coma Corrector is specifically suited for this Off Axis Guider. Normal coma correctors cannot be used because the distance between the corrector and the camera is extended by about 23mm.

Easy Guider for 5-8" Schmidt Cassegrains

SCT Off Axis Guider

The left part is the 360° rotation mechanism

The central part is the main body of the Off Axis Guider with movable turret

The right part is the 2"-T2 adapter

The Lumicon Easy Guider for Schmidt-Cassegrains is a very high quality Off Axis Guider that can be used on all Schmidt-Cassegrains with the common SC thread. Likewise it will work on many other instruments with the SC thread and sufficient back focus distance, such as Intes Micro Maksutov-Cassegrains.

The Easy Guider comes with a 50mm focal reduction lens. Depending on the position inside the Off Axis Guider at which you install the lens you will achieve a 0.63 to 0.5x reduction factor. This reduces the exposure time by a factor 2-4!

You can also use the Lumicon Easy Guider for visual applications. For this the Lumicon Easy Guider has a 2" adaptation.

The 360° rotation mechanism and the movable 1.25" turret for the guiding eyepiece or camera allow you to reach a large field for the search for a guiding star.

The Lumicon Easy Guider comes with a 2"-T2 adapter. You can attach most common DSLR or CCD cameras using that thread.

Deep Sky Filter for Astro-Imaging

The Lumicon Deep Sky Filter is used to boost contrast under illuminated observing conditions. A large amount of unwanted stray light is filtered out while the important astronomical wavelengths are permitted nearly completely. As a result the background will get much darker, resulting in better images photographically or more contrast visually.

The light of the background stars is permitted to a fairly large degree and the white balance of the image is not altered much. The Lumicon Deep Sky Filter is therefore recommended when some form of contrast boost is needed while the stars in the background shall not be filtered out for aesthetic reasons.

Minus Violett Filter

The Lumicon Violet Reduction Filter is a very important filter for owners of refractor telescopes, in particular for astro-imaging.

Refractors (except very expensive apochromats) suffer from some degree of false colour that will show up on photos taken with such a telescope. To reduce this false colour you could use a normal yellow filter, but that filter will increase exposure times and will cause an unnatural colour of the image.

The Lumicon Violet Reduction filter is the solution for this classical problem. With it the false colour is reduced by a large amount, image sharpness is improved and the white balance will not be changed much.

The left image of the comet Hyakutake was taken with a 40mm tele lens. Normally such a simple tele produces a very prominent blue fringe around the stars. The Violet reduction filter has nearly completely eliminated these fringes.

H-Alpha Pass Filter

H-Alpha is the most common wavelength of hydrogen nebulae. The Lumicon H-Alpha filter is used on the well-known H-II objects, the red emission nebulae.

This is a photographical filter. If you use a CCD camera or a hyper-sensitived TP-2415 film in combination with the Astronomik H-Alpha filter you will get an extreme contrast gain. Even from light-polluted areas like large cities you can take extremely high contrast images of objects like the North America Nebula.

The Lumicon H-Alpha filter is not a solar filter!

Further Nebular Filters

H-Beta Nebular Filter

The H-Beta filter is a true narrowband filter, having a bandwidth of only 14nm around the H-beta center wavelength (489.1nm). You get extremely good results with hydrogen nebulae like the California Nebula or the famous Horsehead Nebula.

Additionally the filter is very interesting for photographical experiments, especially using CCD equipment.

Used with a 250mm (10") aperture telescope the filter will - very dark sky background provided - show the Horsehead Nebula in its characteristic shape. The H-Beta filter is a perfect mate for the UHC and O-III filters.

Swan Band Kometenfilter

Comets are certainly among the most popular objects for amateur astronomers. Each comet is different from all others, but they usually share some features which allowed for the creation of a contrast boosting filter specifically for comets. The filter improves visibility and contrast of faint belt details, both photographically and visually. We recommend the filter for telescopes with 120mm aperture or more.

As a side-effect the Swan-Band filter improves contrast on many gas nebulae as well.

O-III Nebelfilter

The O-III filters are of the same high quality as the well-known UHC filters. They supplement the UHC's ideally. When it comes to planetary nebulae, or gas nebulae like the Veil nebula, Astronomik O-III filters are most effective.

While UHC filters can be used on small-aperture telescopes we recommend the use of O-III filters in larger telescopes (200mm aperture and larger, 150mm with some objects). If you have such a big telescope, though, nothing will surpass the contrast you get with the O-III on countless emission nebulae and planetary nebulae.

UHC Nebelfilter

These filters are among the best nebular filters available. They suppress any annoying stray light, letting pass only the specific O-III (planetary nebulae) and H-Beta (emission nebulae, like the North America Nebula) spectral lines. With these filters you will see that successful Deep-Sky observations can also be made near cities.

Furthermore the filters are very robust. You may try to clean them even with less than perfect cleaning methods without damaging them. While other filters might be scratched the Lumicon filters will still be in a perfect condition. Also, the filters do not age, you can use them for many years without them showing any less (or worse: more) than on the first night.
