Newtonians by Orion Optics, England

Nowadays the great majority of telescopes come from the Far East, in particular from China. Chinese telescopes have reached a certain level of quality and can in most cases be recommended due to their wonderful value for money.

Orion Optics in England produces a line of Newtonian telescopes that set themselves apart from their cheaper counterparts. Both optics and mechanics of these telescopes are made in Europe to very high standards of quality.

Orion now produces telescopes from 150mm to over 400mm aperture. There are countless options available, making each telescope essentially unique, but all telescopes share some very important features:

Available Setups / Mounting Options:

The above is but one example for a complete setup based on an Orion Newtonian. We are able to combine the telescopes with nearly all mounts in our product range, so please request your set offer!
-- Certified and guaranteed optical quality. Each telescope comes with a Zygo interferometric test of its quality. We guarantee a value of 1/6 lambda P/V with a Strehl ratio of no less than 0.95.

-- Enhanced reflectivity coating. The HILUX coating offers a reflectivity of 96%! Compared with a standard coating this is about 8% more light! As a result, an Orion 10" Newtonian collects nearly as much light as a regular 12" Newtonian!

-- Low weight. One of the main advantages of the Orion Newtonians. Depending on the exact specifications these Newtonians are 10-40% lighter than many other Newtonians of the same aperture!

-- Two different mirror cells available. The simple 3-point cell is the recommended solution for telescopes up to about 250mm aperture. This simple cell saves a lot of weight and experience shows that it has no negative influence on the image quality.

-- High quality 2" Crayford focuser - zero image shift! This focuser offers a very smooth and fine focus motion. The focuser has a 1:10 dual speed microfocusing knob for even better focusing precision!

-- Sufficient back focus for use of SLR cameras. With the proper adaptation you can even use our new Low-Profile Off Axis Guider with these Newtonians!

-- Many different mount adaptations are available, most notably dovetail plates for Vixen- or Losmandy style saddle plates.

-- There is a broad choice of available apertures and focal lengths, depending on your specific needs.

Available Instruments / Stock List

As mentioned previously there are countless different variants of the Orion Newtonians available. (In our last count we reached over 1000 (sic!) different variants of these telescopes!)

For this reason we have decided not to give a list of universal specifications for telescopes of each given size, as we do it for other telescope lines. Instead we list each single instrument below. For each telescope the important specifications are mentioned in this list.

Each instrument in this list carries a TS stock number and is a unique instrument. If more than one telescope of each size is available each single instrument is listed with its own TS stock number. When placing an order please always give us the TS stock number of the desired instrument!

Telescopes not on this list are custom made. As a result of this delivery times may range in the months and we unfortunately cannot accept cancellations or returns of such instruments.

Larger Apertures
We have in stock telescopes up to 400mm aperture,
but we have not yet completed our inventory.

These larger telescopes will be listed here very shortly!

TS Newtonian 250/1200mm (f/4.8)

This lightweight Newtonian makes 250mm aperture portable enough for small cars. It can be carried with good stability by relatively light equatorial mounts. In our opinion this is a great alternative if you want 250mm, both visually and for photography, on a budget.

The telescope's light weight does not come at the cost of improper mechanical quality or poor workmanship. You can easily do long exposure photographs with this instrument.
Specifications:
Tube weight 8.5 kg
Tube length 1127  mm
Finder 6x30 finder
Focuser 2" with 1.25" adaptor
Diameter secondary mirror 63mm
Limiting magnitude 14.5 mag
Resolution 0.46"
TS Newtonian 250/1600mm (f/6.3)

If you want the best image quality you can afford in combination with a large aperture, this is the telescope for you. The telescope's long focal ratio drastically reduces aberrations like Coma, while the small secondary mirror means great contrast.

You will not suffer any problems with coma. You may even use a SLR camera without a coma corrector. What's more, planetary details are wonderful with this instrument due to its great on-axis sharpness and contrast.
Specifications:
Tube weight 9 kg
Tube length 1520 mm
Finder 6x30 finder
Focuser 2" with 1.25" adaptor
Diameter secondary mirror 50mm
Limiting magnitude 14.5 mag
Resolution 0.46"

TS Newtonian 300/1200mm (f/4)

300mm of aperture on a compact equatorial mount - impossible? Not quite. I have to admit that it looks a bit curious, but due to the telescope's low weight and compact dimensions it can even be carried by the relatively light H-EQ5. Admittedly this combination is the absolute maximum of what the mount can carry and reacts strongly to wind - but it works for visual use.

With a heavier mount astronomical photography will turn out results which you had previously only dreamed of. The telescope's enormous light-gathering capacity will catch even faint astronomical objects on your film or CCD chip.
Specifications:
Tube weight 11.5 kg
Tube length 1100  mm
Finder 8x50 finder
Focuser 2" with 1.25" adaptor
Diameter secondary mirror 75mm
Limiting magnitude 15 mag
Resolution 0.38"
TS Newtonian 300/1600 (f/5,3)

This is the better allround telescope. It will show dramatic details on the moon and the planets. If the air is calm (good "seeing") you will be surprised what tiny and elusive details this telescope shows. Typically it will be the atmospheric conditions, not the telescope itself, that will limit the scope's performance.

Obviously this telescope is primarily made for deep-sky observations. It's huge light-gathering capacity will show faint details in galaxies and nebulae. In comparison to its shorter focal length sibling this version requires less expensive eyepieces. For photography you may not need a coma corrector at all. Please keep in mind that this telescope needs a more sturdy mount than the f/4 version.
Specifications:
Tube weight 12 kg
Tube length 1500  mm
Finder 8x50 finder
Focuser 2" with 1.25" adaptor
Diameter secondary mirror 63mm
Limiting magnitude 15 mag
Resolution 0.38"

Specifications:
Tube weight 18 kg
Tube length 1500  mm
Finder 6x30 finder
Focuser 2" with 1.25" adaptor
Diameter secondary mirror 75mm
Limiting magnitude 15.5 mag
Resolution 0.32"
TS Newtonian 350/1600mm - Aperture 350mm - Focal Length 1600mm - f4.6

A wonderful instrument for a stationary observatory. The low tube weight allows to use relatively light and affordable mounts instead of having to choose an extremely expensive mount.

The telescope is so powerful that under typical European observing conditions the telescope is not the limit to what you can see.
