TS Off Axis Guider - Only 9mm Length!

The TS Optics Off Axis Guider is the lowest profile OAG that we currently know and offers many unique features.

- Extremely easy to use: Separate focusing mechanism for the guiding turret, scanning function for searching a guide star, three available positions for the main camera.

- Ultra-low profile: You can use the Off Axis Guider on telescopes with a very narrow back focus (e.g. on Newtonians). The guider can even be used between an image corrector and the camera!

- Compatible with almost any camera: The TS OAG9 can be used with DSLR cameras as well as CCD cameras. Even large format CCD cameras can be used!

- Large clear aperture: The TSOAG9 is available with a direct M48 adaptation and thus has a much larger clear aperture than possible with a T2 adaptation.

TS Flat 2 - Top Performance Field Flattener for f/5 to f/8 Refractors

The TS Flat 2 is a very high quality, top performance field flattener that works with almost any refractor telescope. It has been tested and approved for many refractors from f/5 to f/8.

In all refractors we tested it with the results with the TS Flattener were at least equal to, and typically much better than any other flattener we have compared it with, including the flatteners recommended by the respective telescope manufacturers.

With its special layout the TS Flattener allows for the use of filter supports, off axis guiders and similar accessories between the camera and the flattener. This offers a previously unheard-of flexibility of use!

For a few quick impressions of the image quality please see below!

For a full description with specifications and prices please find the presentation in our new Online Shop!

Sample Image: NGC 6992 on a TMB 105/650 APO with TS Field Flattener

The following images are magnified sub-frames of a full APS format (Canon EOS) frame. They are shown at 300% of the original resolution. The left image shows where the sub-frame is located on the original image.

The image was taken on a 72/400mm ED refractor without flattener, with the original flattener recommended by the refractor manufacturer, and with the TS Field Flattener.

You can clearly see that the TS Field Flattener offers by far the best image quality!
Image without field flattener. The stars are elongated. Even at 50% resolution this will still be clearly visible. This is the typical impression with almost any refractor and it demonstrates why field flatteners are so important! Image with the officially recommended field flattener offered by the manufacturer of the refractor. The image quality is better than without field flattener, but stars are still distorted. This effect is also visible at the regular 100% resolution. Image with the TS Field Flattener. Stars are pinpoints out to the edge of the field of view. Even at very close inspection (remember that this is 300% resolution!) no distortion of the stars' image can be seen.

View through the Chesire collimation eyepiece in a Newtonian - you can see the slight miscollimation.

View of a slightly miscollimated refractor. Both rings should be centered.

Chesire Collimation Eyepiece 1.25"

The Chesire collimation eyepiece is the classical tool for Newtonian and refractor collimation. Light is reflected into the telescope through the 45° angled surface. When looking through the small porthole of the Chesire you will see the separate optical components and the reflections thereon. A perfectly aligned telescope will have all reflections centered around each other.

A crosshair at the front end of the Chesire helps to know where the center is.

The Chesire has a broad rim that is precisely machined so that it will sit in the focuser in perfect alignment - if this were not the case collimation would be imprecise.

For a refractor alignment is just as easy. You will see one reflection for each glass-to-air surface. If the telescope is perfectly aligned all reflections will be centered - in general such a perfect collimation is not necessary, though. It is enough if the reflections are inside one another, they need not be centered.

Binocular Viewers

Observing with both eyes means a significant gain in your eyes' ability to see faint details. At the same time you will be more relaxed and can observe for longer periods without straining your eyes. Binocular viewing is helpful both for lunar, planetary and deep sky observing.

A nice side effect is that negative effects of seeing conditions do no affect the image as much. When watching with both eyes objects seem larger than with only one eye.

The light is split 50/50 for each eye. Despite that you will not notice a loss in image brightness - the human brain is able to add the images seen with both eyes and even see more detail than would be possible with one eye.

1.25" ronchi eyepiece - full view

1.25" Ronchi Eyepiece - A Tool For Testing Telescope Optics

The Ronchi Eyepiece is used like a normal eyepiece. It is inserted into the 1.25" clamp of your telescope and then "focused" with the focuser. The only difference is that you look at the image from both sides of the focus.

You will see several "bars" that describe the surface of the optics. Theoretically perfect optics (even though we haven't seen such optics before) have perfectly straight ronchi lines. The lines can be curved, distorted, ..., always hinting to various different optical aberrations.

Warning: While it is easy for everyone to see optical aberrations with the Ronchi eyepiece a lot of experience is required to judge how strong those aberrations are.

The Ronchi eyepiece has 10 lines per mm.

Micrometer Guide Scope Holder
holds even heavy guide scopes and allows for a precise alignment

Geleit - Geoptik micrometer guide scope holder GK2 - full view

The usual way of mounting a guide scope is through guide scope rings. Unfortunately guide scope rings have several important disadvantages. First of all they require a lot of extra space because you need to be able to operate the screws on all sides of the rings. Most importantly guide scope rings usually move the guide scope at 120° angles - you are still able to move the guide scope in all directions, but not very intuitively!

The Micrometer Guide Scope Holder is the solution for these problems! It strongly holds a guide scope or heavy camera in position and allows for a smooth and intuitive movement in two axes (up-down and left-right). The excenter fully replaces conventional guide scope rings or excenters.

The Micrometer Guide Scope Holder has no play and will not lose alignment.

Fields of Use:

- precisely aligning a guide scope on a guide star. No additional guide scope rings or excenters are needed.
- adapting a heavy camera with tele lens parallel to the main telescope. A precise alignment is possible.

TS Off Axis Guider - Radial Guider 2" - Super Low Profile
A highly refined off-axis guider with unique features! Ideal for guiding with as little additional weight as possible.

TS Off Axis Guider 2" 27mm - full view
TS Off Axis Guider 2" 27mm in use on a Newtonian telescope
Image:
The 2" Off Axis Guider mounted on a Newtonian telescope. Shown here with an Antares 10mm illuminated reticle eyepiece.

As you can see this Radial Off Axis Guider will work even with some Newtonian telescopes. But please note that in many Newtonians even this highly optimized off axis guider is too long and you won't reach focus with it. Please make sure that your telescope has at least 82mm back focus with the focuser fully racked in!
Off-Axis Guiders are probably one of the most ingenious inventions for astro-imaging. For exposure times of more than just a few seconds you need to correct the automatic motion of your mount for tracking errors. If possible this is done with a second telescope side by side to the main telescope (e.g. using a TS Duomount XL).

Advantages of the Off Axis Guider

A guide scope usually means a lot of extra weight for your mount to cope with. This is problematic unless you own a mount with sufficient power reserves. Of course a second telescope and side-by-side mounting gear tend to be quite expensive, too! An Off Axis Guider is often the cheaper solution.

The main advantage however is that the main camera and the guider use the same optical train. No matter how much a telescope might flex, or the mirror shift, both the main camera and guider will experience the same deviation. This means that you can correct not only imprecisions in your mount, but also in your telescope!

How the Off Axis Guider works

The Off Axis Guider is put between the camera and the telescope. It will let most of the light pass unobstructed, but a small cone of light will be reflected 90° to the side. You can move the prism in order to center a guide star.

Applications for the Off Axis Guider

The Off Axis Guider is made for long exposure astro imaging. We consider anything that is more than a few seconds to be long exposure. All astronomical mounts require a certain amount of correction of their sidereal tracking.

TS Off Axis guider 2" 27mm with mounted 2" barrel
Image:
The 2" Off Axis Guider with the optional 2" barrel extension. This extension is needed unless you use a coma corrector, field flattener or other device in front of the OAG.
Specifications:

Effective Length 1 27mm - ultra low profile
(inserted into focuser)
Effective Length 2 34mm (between coma corrector or field flattener and T-mount thread)
Telescope Adaptation 2" barrel (only 7mm) with 2" filter thread.
Usually you will need additional adaptations. If you do not use a coma corrector or field flattener you need the TS VF 2 barrel extension.
Camera Adaptation T2 thread (M42x0.75)
Guiding Tube Adaptation 1.25"

TS Off Axis Guider = A Modified Celestron Radial Guider

The original Celestron Radial Guider is one of the most cleverly designed off axis guiders that we know. It is excellent if used with a Schmidt-Cassegrain as long as you do not plan to use a focal reducer.

Based on this already excellent product we have developed the TS OAG 2 as a low profile variant. This variant keeps the great features of the original, but adds its own unique features:

-- You can rotate the guiding turret by about 100° without unlocking the telescope connection. Thus you can effectively scan the sky for a guide star without the risk to lose focus with the main camera! Only if no guide star can be found in this 100° arc you have to release the telescope connection. With conventional off axis guiders you have to release it every time!

-- The prism can be tilted easily and precisely in order to scan for a guide star in a much broader area! The tilt motion is done with a thumbscrew, offering a much smoother adjustment than the conventional method of sliding the prism further into or out of the guider.

-- Even very heavy cameras, filter wheels etc can be used with very good stability. The central body of the guider is one part, from the telescope to the camera. The guiding turret sits outside on its rotatable collar. The movement of the turret does not affect the central body of the guider.

All these great features have one key result: It is now very easy to find a guide star, much unlike many simpler off axis guiders.

Telescopes that the TS OAG 2 is compatible with:

The TS Radial Off Axis Guider cannot normally be used with telescopes that have a 1.25" focuser.

But due to its very short length and the versatile 2" short-barrel connection this Off Axis Guider can be used on almost any other telescope:

-- Newtonian Telescopes ... The Off Axis Guider requires only 27mm optical path. This will allow you to use it in many Newtonian telescopes despite their notoriously short back focus distance. The TS Radial Off Axis Guider can even be used together with coma correctors. We offer the necessary adapters.

-- Refractors ... The main advantage here is that you can frequently use the TS Radial Off Axis Guider together with field flattening lenses! Usually this is not possible with off axis guiders with a longer build.

-- Schmidt-Cassegrains and similar ... Commonly these telescopes are used with focal reducers or other correcting lenses for photography. With conventional off axis guiders this can be problematic due to the longer distance between the camera and the reducer. With the TS Radial Off Axis Guider this is usually no problem. Please request your specific adaptation for this setup!

-- CCD Cameras (ATiK, Artemis, ...) ... Normal CCD cameras require a much shorter back focus than SLR cameras. This opens some interesting possibilities such as using both a filter wheel and the off axis guider at the same time!
