Modular 2x VIP-Barlow Lens
Possible Connections: 2" and 1.25" and T-2

Modular 2x VIP Barlow lens - single parts vs. assembled The optical layout of the Baader VIP Barlow with apochromatic properties was created by the designer of the Carl Zeiss Abbe eyepieces.

Main feature of the VIP Barlow is its modular design. Countless adaptations are possible, the Barlow can be used both photographically and visually. In combination with additional adaptors variable magnification is possible.

In our opinion the Baader VIP Barlow is probably one of the best and most versatile Barlow lenses currently available.

The Barlow lens consists of seven separate parts, resulting in its astonishing modularity and flexibility of use. Even the full 35mm SLR film format can be fully illuminated with this Barlow lens. You can modify the Barlow to work with 2" eyepieces or use it as a glass path corrector for accessories that require much back focus (binocular viewers ...). 2" and 1.25" filters can be used.

Baader VIP Barlow lens scheme The Left Image Shows The Separate Parts That Make Up The VIP Barlow:

It consists of:

14 - Adaptor 1.25" on T2

4D - high image definition apochromatic Barlow element

25A1 - T2 extension tube and photographical adaptor

25A2 - T2 extension tube 15mm

29 - T2 on M48 adaptor. Can be screwed directly into the 2" filter thread of most 2" eyepieces.

15 - 2" on 1.25" adaptor with brass compression ring and integrated T2 threads on both sides. The final adaptor protects the T2 male thread when not in use.

Parts (1) and (2) as well as the depicted 2" filter are not included.

The Baader VIP Barlow Lens Is Perfectly Suited For:

- digital imaging and webcam imaging
- visual use both with 1.25" and 2" eyepieces
- glass path corrector for binocular viewers

Astro-Physics 2" Apochromatic Barlow Lens 2x

Astrophysics 2" Barlow lens

One of the shortest and best 2" Barlow lenses according to our tests. The Barlow lens is of course fully multi-coated and is perfectly suited for both photographical and visual applications.

You can use this Barlow lens with any 2" eyepiece for extremely comfortable medium-power views. With an optional 2" on 1.25" adaptor you can of course also use it with 1.25" eyepieces.

2" eyepieces are firmly held by a brass compression ring. This will perfectly center your eyepiece on the optical axis and as a nice side-effect will avoid scratches to your eyepieces.

The lens element also fits 2" clamps directly and has a T2 thread for universal adaptations. You can use it for attaching a camera (integrated Barlow functionality) or even some binocular viewers. The Astro-Physics Barlow then serves as a glass path corrector for additional back focus.

By using optional T2 extension tubes (B1508154 / B1508155) you can enhance the magnification beyond 2x for additional versatility of use.

Baader Nebula Filters

Baader UHC-S nebula filter

UHC Filter - General Use Contrast Boosting Filter For Gas Nebulae

UHC filters bring an enormous improvement for viewing low contrast, faint gas nebulae and planetary nebulae. They allow you to watch these objects even from urban areas where they would otherwise be invisible or barely discernible. The filter blocks stray light caused by street lights et al while transmitting the light of the nebulae nearly unhindered.

The Baader UHC-S filter can be used with telescopes of all apertures. Even small telescopes gain a lot from this filter, where some other UHC filters might render too dark images. Contrast is even enhanced at high magnifications.

Baader UHC-S filter: Transmission curve
Spectral Transmission Graphic - The 550nm to 600nm range is the main source of artificial stray light. This is where the filter blocks light nearly 100%, effectively reducing the amount of stray light that enters your eyepiece while permitting the light from the nebula nearly unhindered.

The spectral transmission graphic shows where disturbing stray light is blocked. As you can see ultraviolet (UV) light is blocked as well.

The "valleys" are the spectral location of the most common light pollution sources, i.e. many street lights etc.

The following astronomically important spectral lines are transmitted nearly unhindered:

H-Beta (486nm)
Horsehead Nebula, California Nebula, ...

O-III (501nm)
Planetary nebulae like the Dumbbell Nebula, Ring Nebula, ...

H-Alpha (656nm)
Gas nebulae like the North America Nebula, ...

The Baader UHC-S filter offers a brighter image than most common nebula filters. This allows you to use the Baader filter in small aperture telescopes.

The filter has a scratch- and age-resistant dielectric coating. The filter is precisely finished to high optical standards.

Please send requests or online orders to: sales@telescope-service.com

Baader O-III nebula filter O-III Filter - For Viewing Planetary Nebulae With Maximum Contrast

O-III filters are particularly well suited for planetary nebulae. These nebulae have many details to offer in the O-III spectral line. Gas nebulae as well often contain O-III regions, meaning that the O-III filter will enhance contrast in these as well - even more so than in a UHC filter, and much more than without any filter at all.

The Baader O-III filter has a particularly narrow filter curve. We recommend to use it only in large aperture telescopes. The filter is a good mate for a broader filter like a UHC - that way you can always try which filter works best on each particular object.

Baader O-III filter: Transmission curve The spectral transmission graphic shows where disturbing stray light is blocked. As you can see ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR) light is blocked as well.

Only a very narrow spectral range is permitted through the filter - the bandwidth is only 6nm around the central wavelength of 501nm.

The O-III filter allows you to observe faint planetary nebulae even in urban regions with heavy light pollution. Even at low magnifications the sky background is pitch black.

The filter has a scratch- and age-resistant dielectric coating. The filter is precisely finished to high optical standards.

Contrast Enhancing Filters for Moon and Planets

Baader Skyglow Filter
Skyglow Filter Neodymium

The Baader Skyglow filter is a universal contrast filter for all objects within our solar system. It enhances contrast of all reddish details (for example the famous Great Red Spot on Jupiter), as well as of blue details (like some surface and atmospheric details on Mars). A positive feature is that the image retains its natural colours in contrast to regular colour filters.

You can also use the filter on the deep sky, contrast is enhanced a little in bright planetary nebulae or other nebulous objects, like for instance the Great Orion Nebula.

Obviously the Skyglow filter can also be used for astro-imaging for a general boost in contrast.

Now the Skyglow filter has been revised and features many advancements over the older version. A specially hard glass is used for the filter and the filter's surface is covered with a 7-layer multicoating. This makes the filter scratch-proof and age-resistant. Optical surfaces are absolutely parallel to each other and precisely polished to tight tolerances.

Baader U-Filter (Venus filter)
Baader - UV / Venus filter
The image shows the discontinued 1.25" filter. Now available only in 2"

below: spectral transmission curve

2" Filter for Venus Imaging

Cloud structures in the atmosphere of Venus are difficult to capture with amateur instruments. Many amateurs believe that only very large aperture specialized instruments can show these structures at all.

The main problem is filtering, though. By combining several colour and interference filters contrast gains are possible, but the cloud structures remain hidden anyway because of long wavelength light (beyond 400nm) that is permitted through the filters.

The Baader-Venus filter only permits those wavelengths that make cloud structures in the atmosphere of Venus become discernible - Ultra-Violet light (UV).

This allows capturing Venus in UV light. Cloud structures become available even in relatively small instruments. Any distracting light is not permitted through the filter. This means the end to no-contrast Venus images.

The image to the right was captured by Mr.Rietze (Baader Planetarium) only two days before the Venus transit.

The filter is precisely polished, the glass plate is Schott UG-11. A 20 layer dielectric coating is applied to the glass plate.

IR Pass Filter

Mars image taken with the help of a Baader IR Pass filter

Image of Mars captured with a webcam using the IR Pass filter.

IR Pass Filter - Contrast Enhancing Filter for Lunar and Planetary Imaging as well as other uses

The Baader IR Pass filter blocks nearly the total visible spectrum. At 685 Nanometers (beyond the red part of the spectrum) 50% of light passes through the filter. Beyond that transmissioin is higher. In order to be able to find focus with your eyes the light transmission begins at the still visible 685nm, offering a dark red image.

The IR Pass filter reduces seeing effects
The negative influence of seeing (turbulences) isn't as prominent at longer wavelengths. As a result you get very high contrasts and an astonishing sharpness by stacking several images (e.g. using Giotto) captured with the IR Pass filter.

Using the IR Pass filter on the Deep-Sky
This is another field of use for this filter. Many amateurs experiment with deep sky imaging, trying to make structures in the IR part of the spectrum visible.

Secondary Spectrum Reduction / Contrast Boosting Filters For Fraunhofer (Achromatic) Refractors

Baader Fringe Killer Filters Fringe Killer
Reduces False Colour and Enhances Contrast on Achromatic Refractors up to 5" Aperture

This filter is an improved Minus Violet filter. It has a transmission of about 50% for blue light in order to reduce the yellow hue that is a side-effect of other filters.

In contrast to simple filters the glass of the Fringe Killer is precisely polished to tight tolerances. They are hard coated - you can easily clean them. With the hard coating the filters are among the most age- and scratch-resistant filters available.

Furthermore, an IR and UV cut filter is integrated into the Fringe Killer. This makes the filter suited for digital imaging without compromises.

Baader Kontrastbooster filter Contrast Booster - Reduces False Colour in Fraunhofer Achromats of 5" and Larger

A truly unique filter for manifold purposes - vastly increased sharpness in comparison to combinations of classical filters of regularly polished coloured glass, where all optical imperfections add up to destroy the image quality of even the best telescope! For entry-level telescopes this filter is an excellent replacement for the basic green moon filter of regularly polished glass, as well as for solar observations (only in conjunction with the Baader AstroSolar filter sheets!)

Baader Kontrast-Booster for achromatic refractors and for enhancing contrast in all reflecting telescopes.

Properties:

- effectively eliminates false colour of common air-spaced doublet (Fraunhofer) refractor telescopes - recommended from 5" aperture upwards. For smaller refractors we recommend the Fringe Killer
- removes the blue fringe (and resulting loss of contrast) in lunar, planetary, solar and terrestrial observations!
- eliminates the very prominent blue halo in digital images
- surface details on Jupiter and Mars become more prominent! If you so far have never seen the Great Red Spot on Jupiter, with this filter you will be able to see it!
- over 95% light transmission. When compared to dark green filters otherwise used for enhancing contrast on Jupiter you will notice a much brighter and more brilliant, true colour image!
- wonderful moon filter for entry-level telescopes. The Moon (and the sun) appear more natural (in a slightly yellow hue) than in classical, dark green moon filters often sold with small telescopes. You will notice that never before you have seen such sharp images of the moon or the sun (only in conjunction with the AstroSolar filter sheet!) in any beginners' telescope.
- blocks atmospheric stray light (skyglow), dims the sky background
- fits all standard filter threads; can be combined for instance with the precisely polished Baader Infrared Cut filter, with which you can eliminate the loss in contrast through unfocused infrared light - a must-have for digital imaging!
- precisely polished to tight tolerances; can be used far away from focus (as with binoviewers or afocal projectives for digital cameras) without any loss of image sharpness.
- no image breakdown above 150x as with regularly polished filters
- substrate: neodymium doped colour glass
- coating (back side): 7-layer hard multicoating
coating (front side): 23-layer ion-beam longpass-blockcoating
- hard, scratch-resistant, age-resistant coating on both sides. The filter can be cleaned as often as you like!

Never before has anyone gone through such lengths in the production of such a low-cost filter which will enhance image sharpness - especially in entry-level telescopes - drastically!

Semi APO Filter - Efficient Reduction of the False Colour

This filter drastically reduces false colour in achromatic refractors without the otherwise common yellow hue of the entire image.

The Semi APO filter is a brand new addition to the Baader filter range. We tested it at our Open House with excellent results.

How It Works
By precisely cutting off those regions of the spectrum in which false colour of refractor telescopes dominates the negative influence of this false colour is minimized, resulting in better contrast and image sharpness.

What sets it apart from the Fringe Killer, Contrast Booster, Violet Reduction Filter, ...
All of these filters have the same basic function and work on the same principle. They reduce false colour visible in achromatic refractors. Unlike the Semi APO filter they cause a strong yellow hue over the entire image - white stars will become yellow. This is in some cases a positive side effect, in particular when viewing the planets.

The Semi APO filter colours the image much less. The image gets a little bit "warmer" and has a slight greenish-yellow hue, but much less prominent than in most other filters. Transmission is better than in typical violet reduction filters. This makes the filter suitable for deep-sky, e.g. for double stars.

We recommend the Semi APO filter as an addition to the Fringe Killer or Contrast Booser, or as a replacement for a violet reduction filter. It offers a more neutral image colour.

Which telescopes is the Semi APO filter recommended for?
The Semi APO filter is suited for all refractor telescope with a discernable secondary spectrum (false colour). It has the greatest effect in short tube refractors that are known for their prominent false colour. Even in ED refractors you will typically get a better image quality on bright objects.

CCD (LRGB) Filters, Colour Filters, Neutral (Grey) Filters

Baader IR/UV Cut filter Infrared & UV Cut Filter 1.25" and 2"

Excellent filter for cutting off the infrared and ultraviolet part of the spectrum. The filter has a 1.25" filter thread on both sides for combination with other filters. The surfaces are precisely polished to tight tolerances. They have a dielectrical coating to make the filter age- and scratch-resistant.

Combined with the red colour filter (Schott RG 610 - 25 Euro) red contrasts can be raised by 500% on the CCD chip. With this combination you can take excellent images of H-II regions.

Recommended Use:
CCD Chips are sensitive to UV and IR. Telescope objectives and other lenses are not well corrected beyond the visible spectrum. Without an IR/UV cut filter the contrast of the images would suffer. Whenever there is any glass between the object and the camera you should use the IR/UV cut filter!

Canon EOS 300D with Baader ACF filter
left: Baader IR cut filter - right: original Canon filter

Infrared & UV Cut Filter for Canon EOS Cameras

Canon Digital SLR cameras are amongst the most popular cameras for astro-imaging. They do not require a computer nearby, are very sensitive and have a very high resolution. Many of today's most beautiful astroimages were taken with such cameras.

The cameras do have one drawback for astro-imaging, though. The original IR cut filter installed by Canon has only a very bad transmission in the important red H-Alpha line. Many gas nebulae with H-2 regions are consequently difficult to photograph with a standard camera.

Baader has created an IR cut filter that will fit directly into Canon's halfsize chip cameras. The filter has nearly full transmission in the H-Alpha line. This eliminates the cameras' only major disadvantage.

The filter is made so that the autofocus mechanism of your camera will continue to work without problems. You just need to manually adjust the white balance of the camera if you wish to continue to use it for normal photography also.

We offer the Baader IR cut filter separately to customers with advanced mechanical and electronical knowledge. The process of refitting the camera with a different filter requires much caution and care and we do recommend to do it only if you have a clear idea of what you are doing!

Alternatively we offer the current Canon DSLR cameras with Baader IR cut filter already installed.

Baader color filters (six colors) Colour Filters and Colour Filter Kit (6 Filters)

These filters are designed with the specific needs of amateur astronomers in mind. They are precisely polished and coated on both sides. As a result you can also use the filters at a larger distance from the eyepiece, e.g. with a filter wheel or a binocular viewer, where normal colour filters often fail to offer a good image quality.

According to our own tests we believe that these filters are among the best available. They have the standard 1.25" or 2" filter thread on both sides, allowing you to combine them for additional flexibility. The included spectral transmission curve allows you to precisely match the filters for your particular needs.

Max Bright Binoviewer
New: A low cost, good quality binocular viewer - an alternative to the ubiquitous cheap Chinese binoviewers!

Baader Maxbright Binoviewer - full view

Baader Max Bright - Binocular Viewer

Cheap binocular viewers have been introduced by nearly every well-known brand worldwide in the recent past. These have been discussed intensely in various astronomical forums and newsgroups. One particular problem keeps surfacing in these threads: Miscollimtion. Quite frequently these binoviewers seem to be delivered with good collimation, but seem to lose collimation with time. In many cases binocular viewers reach their new owners out of collimation in the first place.

This problem can be explained by the mechanical design. A precise collimation is difficult and time-consuming.

The Solution: Baader Max Bright Binocular Viewer

Baader, seeing this problem, redesigned the body of the binocular viewer completely. He dropped the modified Microscope body altogether. The prisms are solidly held in an injection moulded body. The eyepiece holder is adjustable for collimation, just as in the Mark V binocular viewer.

Which Eyepieces Can Be Used?

Plossl eyepieces up to 25mm can be used easily. Larger prisms offer a larger illuminated field. Just follow the links to the right to find recommended eyepiece lines.
TS Super Plossl
12mm through 25mm focal length are recommended
- good contrast and viewing comfort
TS SWM Eyepieces
TOP recommendation. These eyepieces offer a larger field of view and a longer eye relief.

Baader Maxbright Binoviewer - front view

Note the larger clear aperture and the high quality mechanical finish.
Each eyepiece can be focused separately.

Specifications:

Prisms - Clear Aperture
The prisms were enlarged for deep sky observing.
- clear aperture (telescope side) ... approx. 23mm
- clear aperture (eyepiece side) ..... approx. 21mm
Attention: Many vendors only mention one of these diameters (typically the larger one).

Optical Length
The optical length of this binocular viewer is approximately 110mm.

Coating
The Baader Maxbright binocular viewer has the "Hyperion" multi-layer coating on all glass-to-air surfaces. A brighter image and better deep-sky performance is the result. Most cheap binocular viewers have a simpler coating and therefore less light throughput.

Telescope Connection

The Baader Maxbright Binocular viewer has the very versatile T2 telescope mount. You can attach a broad variety of adaptors, always offering an optimized adaptation to any telescope.

  Diopter Adjustment
Both eyepiece holders resemble smooth micro focusers. You can find perfect focus for both eyes.

Hard Case For Storage And Transport

The Baader Maxbright binocular viewer comes with a robust foam fitted hard case.

The binocular viewer can be stored and transported safely inside the case.

Baader Giant Binocular Viewer Mark V

The culmination of the development of binocular viewers. In our opinion the Baader Mark V is the ultimate binocular viewer for demanding users.
Baader Mk.V giant binoviewer shown with optional accessories

Mk.V Großfeldbino with eyepieces and star diagonal - separated
Baader Mark V Giant Binocular Viewer with optional eyepieces and T2 diagonal

Mk.V Großfeldbino with eyepieces and star diagonal - assembled
Easy to use single eye focus with the Baader Click Lock
This binocular viewer has made a habit of winning all kinds of reviews at regular intervals. No surprise: The groundwork was laid by Carl Zeiss Jena. It was designed as a telescope binocular viewer from the start.

A great improvement of the Mark V over previous models is the Click Lock eyepiece clamp. Eyepieces are held firmly in position and prevented from being tilted out of alignment at the same time.

All prisms are multi-coated and collimated with extreme care needed for an astronomical binocular viewer. The Click Lock eyepiece clamp - in addition to providing a secure and perfectly alligned grip of the eyepieces - allows single eye focusing.

The scope of delivery also contains a T2 quick release devise. It allows you to take off the binocular viewer within just a second, and also offers a smooth 360° rotation.

Telescope connection is a female T2 (M42x0.75) thread.

Maximum Clear Aperture For Use of Any 1.25" Eyepieces!
The oversized 30mm prisms of the Mark V result in an effective clear aperture of 28mm. Even on the side of the eyepieces you still have the full 28mm - this means that you can use any 1.25" eyepieces without vignetting!
Be Careful: Many vendors only state the larger aperture at the side of the telescope and do not mention a possible smaller aperture at the side of the eyepiece!

The Mark V has an optical length of 123mm including the 11mm of the quick release device. Due to its short length it can be used with many Newtonian telescopes with a relatively moderate glass path corrector.

Glass Path Correctors 1.25"

These glass path correctors can be attached to all Baader Binocular viewers. They compensate for the additional optical length of a binocular viewer so that you can reach focus even in telescopes with little back focus. Optically they have a similar function as a Barlow lens.

Glass Path Correctors 2"

The new 2" glass path correctors allow you to use the Binocular viewers on any telescope with a 2" focuser. They are particularly recommended for Newtonians and other telescopes with a short focal ratio, where 1.25" glass path correctors might cause some vignetting.

Baader Multi-Purpose Coma Corrector

Baader MPCC Coma corrector
The Baader Multi Purpose Coma Corrector

The Baader Multi-Purpose Coma Corrector can be used with all Newtonians with a focal ratio between f/4 and f/6. Beyond f/6 you will not need a coma corrector anyway because the Newtonian coma is very little in such telescopes.

A coma corrector works by reducing the design inherent coma of Newtonian telescopes (see left image below). It does not change the focal length.

The telescope connection is 2", so the corrector fits directly into the focuser's 2" clamp. On the other side a T2 (M42x0.75) thread is used to connect a camera. T-rings are available for most common SLR and Digital SLR cameras. Mechanical length is only 3mm.

take a look at the magnified stars in the corners of the image. These large "blobs" are typical for fast focal ratio Newtonians.
The useful field is limited to the central regions.

The stars are much smaller and clearer in the edges of this image. More stars are visible because their light is concentrated on a smaller area of the chip / film.
The useful field is much larger.
